Confession: I love Southern food. While it’s not particularly healthy, one of my favorite parts about dining at a BBQ joints is that I’m able to create a naturally gluten free meal from the meat and sides. When trying to decide on the catering for our wedding, my husband and I settled on BBQ from an amazing place in Upstate New York, but more on that later.

Earlier this week I was reading Brooklyn Magazine and came across this passage in an interview with Top Chef finalist Carla Hall about her new restaurant called “Carla Hall’s Southern Kitchen” opening in Brooklyn this November:

All our sides are vegetarian but all the flavor is left in. We are not a health food restaurant but we want people to come for the tasty sides as much as the chicken, which will also be served oven baked. Our kitchen will be nut free because my partner’s daughter is allergic to nuts and we want her to eat here all the time; she adds to the cuteness of the decor!

Music to my ears! A nut-free kitchen where my husband can safely, and I can eat the sides (sadly, fried chicken is not gluten free)! Count me in! Carla Hall’s Southern Kitchen will offer Nashville Hot Chicken (which is chicken marinated in buttermilk, breaded and sauced with cayenne pepper), mac and cheese, cole slaw, hot water cornbread, and baked goods. To drink, you’ll be able to enjoy imported small batch soda from Pure Sodaworks in Chattanooga, Tennessee (think flavors like apple pie and strawberry jalapeno). Slated to open in late November, I’m counting down the days until I can enjoy! The full menu is below, which was posted on their Kickstarter Page.
