Allergen-Free Protein: Meat-Based Nut-Free, Gluten-Free Bars
When traveling, one of the must-have items my husband and I always pack is beef or turkey jerky. High in protein, low in fat, and shelf-stable, a packet stashed away in our bags always comes in handy when we’re in a bind, or aren’t feeling that the food options available to us are safe. As paleo diets have become more popular, I’ve seen an increase in the number of meat-based protein bars. Below are my favorite allergy-free protein bars.
EPIC Bar: Calling themselves the “original meat, fruit, and nut bar”, this Austin, Texas based company has created delicious meat-based bars which are rich in protein, low and sugar, gluten-free, grain-free, and soy + dairy free. Flavors include Bison Bacon Cranberry, Bacon, Chicken Sesame BBQ, Beef Apple Bacon, Chicken Sriracha, Pulled Pork Pineapple, Beef Peach Raspberry, and Turkey Almond Cranberry + Beef Haberno Cherry (these two flavors contain nuts, proceed with caution). As a huge fan of lamb, I’m obsessed with the Lamb Currant Mint Flavor. Each bar has 11-15g of protein. Please note that while there are nut-free flavors, there are flavors that contain nuts, so proceed with caution.
Bricks Bars:Â Made with grass-fed lean meats, veggies, fruits, and seeds, I personally love Bricks Bars because none of their flavors contain nuts, which make them 100% safe for my husband. Add in that they have delicious flavors like Turkey, Sweet Potato, Cranberry, and Pumpkin Seed (like Thanksgiving in a bar), and Beef, Bacon, Cranberry, Sunflower Seed, which makes them the perfect snack that I look forward to eating. Each bar has 10g of protein.
Tanka: Founded in 2006 on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, owners Karlene Hunter and Mark Tilsen imagined a world filled with healthy foods that added to the restoration and preservation of our lands and ecosystem. Their first product was the Tanka Bar, made from American Buffalo Meat. The ingredient list of the bars are based on wasna, the original Native trail food that combines meat with fruit. Currently, there are three flavors available, apple orange peel, slow smoked original, and spicy pepper (my favorite)! The best part? All Tanka bars are free of the top eight allergens! Each of the original Tanka bars has 7g of protein, and their special “warrior bar” has 14g of protein.
Krantos: In 2012, several athletes and health enthusiasts, loyalists of QuarterShare Gourmet Beef Sticks, were on the hunt for a clean and simple protein snack made of beef, without the casing found on typical beef sticks, and with some “super-berriesâ€. They needed something healthier than beef jerky without the high sodium and the tough texture.  Kratos High Protein Beef Bars were the result.  The team went into the kitchen for many months testing flavors, spices and ingredients.  After several months of informal focus groups they decided to bring to market Zesty Pepper, Acai Berry and Blueberry. In 2014, they introduced the Ginger & Wasabi flavors. All varieties are gluten-free, nut-free, and dairy-free and have 15g of protein.
Cave Man Primal Bars: All three flavors of the Cave Man Primal Bar are lean chicken based. The three flavors available are blueberry pepper, smoke jalepeno, and sweet cherry (my favorite)! All products from Cave Man are gluten-free, peanut-free, all-natural, and have 18g of protein.
Wilde:Â This Boulder, CO based company has created delicious meat-based protein bars that begin with premium lean meat, from animals that were raised without growth hormones and antibiotics. Each small-batch bar is gluten-free, and balanced with ancient grains, super fruits, and herbs and spices. Flavors include chili lime, strawberry black pepper, peach bbq, and maple bacon blueberry. The bars have 10-11g of protein.
