The Allergy Free Wife’s Bite-Sized Guide: Los Angeles

Los Angeles Restaurants and Dessert Shops with Gluten-Free, Nut-Free, and Dairy-Free Options

Prior to my gluten intolerance, eating at restaurants was a regular occurrence for me. When dining with my husband, we’d casually mention his allergies and hope that the server took us seriously, but wouldn’t think twice after mentioning his allergy. Then everything changed. During a normal dinner out, we had a terrifying encounter at one of our favorite restaurants where pine nuts were added into in a dish we didn’t expect them to be present in. We had to go to the hospital, and it was a nerve wracking experience for everyone involved. After this incident I felt a new level of anxiousness about dining out, for fear of my husband’s life.

However, living in fear is no way to live at all, especially in a city like Los Angeles, which is brimming with incredible restaurants. Determined to not be restricted by my gluten intolerance, and his allergies, I’ve found quite a few spots that are not only safe to eat at, but go out of their way to accommodate those with food allergies. My quest continues daily, please be sure to check back as I add new eateries catering to those with food allergies in Los Angeles. Please note that while some of these establishments offer nut-free, gluten-free, dairy-free options, their menu is subject to change and it’s always important to inform your server about your allergies before ordering.

Cafe Gratitude: Cafe Gratitude is a collection of 100% organic plant-based restaurants specializing in gourmet cuisines. The menu changes daily depending on seasonal ingredients available each day. Most of the menu items are raw, however there are a few non-raw items if that’s not your thing! The signature desserts, chocolate, cookies, and housemade ice cream and shakes are worth the indulgence! The pressed juices are also the perfect accompaniment to any breakfast or lunch.

A highlight is the “seafood tower” which spotlights some of the worlds most unique plant based ingredients such as lobster mushrooms, sea beans, and hearts of palm from Costa Rica. Brunch, Lunch, and Dinner are all offered. For those with a nut allergy, proceed with caution as there are many items containing nuts.

Hugo’sRemaining a staple of Los Angeles dining since 1980, Hugo’s has been a favorite of many Los Angelanos for decades! With a large menu with 70+ items in addition to breakfast, lunch, and dinner specials, Hugo’s serves up delicious healthy, clean American fare. Another plus is that Hugo’s has an “allergy alert system” in place. This means that they go out of their way to list they full menu and ingredients online (view here), with common allergens clearly outlined. Hugo’s aims to create a restaurant where everyone can eat together, including those who are vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, or have other dietary restrictions. My favorite menu item is the “Create a Plate” option where you can literally make your own meal. With three locations in Los Angeles, Hugos is easy to access from many Los Angeles neighborhoods. Kitchen Mouse: Kitchen Mouse started almost 4 years ago as a small catering business in owner Erica Daking’s home kitchen, cooking for friends and private dinners. Soon, word got out of Erica’s modern spin of gluten free, vegan food that not only invited the health conscious to enjoy, but everyone else too. Her plant-based, farmer’s market food booms with California flavor and drew such a crowd that it grew out of her house and into something much bigger. Kitchen Mouse Cafe opened up its doors in May of 2014 in Highland Park. All the dishes at Kitchen Mouse are vegetarian, gluten-free and there are many nut-free, soy-free, vegan options as well. If you’re a big breakfast lover, it’s served all day, but if you prefer something more savory, there’s a large range of salads, sandwiches, and baked goods (which are all vegan and gluten free)!
