New York City Restaurants and Dessert Shops with Gluten-Free, Nut-Free, and Dairy-Free Options

Prior to my gluten intolerance, eating at restaurants was a regular occurrence for me. Once I transitioned to a gluten-free diet, I felt afraid to go to restaurants in fear that I’d be gluten-ed. However, living in fear is no way to live at all, especially in a city like New York City, which is brimming with incredible restaurants. Determined to not be restricted by my gluten intolerance, I’ve found quite a few spots that are not only safe to eat at, but go out of their way to accommodate those with food allergies. My quest continues daily, please be sure to check back as I add new eateries catering to those with food allergies in NYC. Please note that while some of these establishments offer nut-free, gluten-free, dairy-free options, their menu is subject to change and it’s always important to inform your server about your allergies before ordering.

New York City Restaurants

Bareburger: With numerous locations across NYC (and elsewhere!), Bareburger has become one of my favorite go-to spots for a quick bite. They serve incredible salads, sandwiches (fried chicken, brisket, duck bacon), and burgers (beef, bison, elk, wild boar, turkey, thee kinds of veggie). All meats are free-range, pasture raised, gluten, and hormone free. With a menu clearly outlining vegan, gluten-free, and nut-free options, I’ve been able to indulge safely. Please note that Bareburger originally used peanut oil to fry their food. After complaints from those with nut-allergies, they have made the switch to canola oil.

Bar Suzette: With the claim of being New York City’s premiere crepe bar, Bar Suzette offers over 40 different types of crepes, with a variety of sweet and savory toppings. The ingredients are locally sourced when possible, and all crepes can be made with a dairy free, egg free, and gluten free batter upon request. Upon further investigation, I found that the allergy free crepe mix is made from just three ingredients: rice flour, lentil flour, and water! There are nut toppings in use, however Bar Suzette takes pride in ensuring no cross contamination occurs, and the nuts are put on the crepes in a separate section of the food prep area. Bar Suzette has a permanent home in the Chelsea Market, however they frequently have pop-up locations at food festivals across the city.

Big Daddy’s: Burgers and breakfast, served all day everyday. Offering a totally nut free kitchen with gluten free options, Big Daddy’s has an extensive menu of classic diner comfort foods. With three locations in NYC (two downtown and one uptown), you’re bound to be close to a Big Daddy’s location. Pro tip: check out their Facebook page to discover their seasonal pancake offerings. Pumpkin spice, fruity pebbles, and berry berry are some of the recent tempting flavors.

Bistango: Ranked by USA Today as one of NYC’s best Italian restaurants, Bistango is one of the most accommodating restaurants to those with food allergies that I’ve ever visited. Immediately after sitting down I was asked if I had any allergies or restrictions which is always a great sign. With a variety of fresh gluten-free stuffed pastas in addition to the fact that any of the regular pasta dishes can be made with gluten free penne, there are also many nut free and dairy free entrees. Ten of their eleven desserts are gluten free, however many contain nuts so stay away from those if you are allergic. With two locations in NYC, the original in Kips Bay, and the other in the Kimberly Hotel in midtown, Bistango is worth a visit for delicious, authentic, allergy friendly Italian food.

Blue Smoke: Inspired by the many regions of the South, from the Carolina coast to the hills of central Texas, the food at Blue Smoke is soulful with a selection of smoked meats, fresh produce, and thoughtfully sourced ingredients. While there are a few menu items containing nuts and gluten, Blue Smoke prides itself as being able to cater to those with food allergies, even offering a separate menu with safe items clearly marked. Lunch, dinner, and southern brunch are available.

By Chloe: This 100% vegan cafe offers a wide-range of gluten-free salads, avocado toast, french fries, and artichoke dip which are all safe to eat for those who can’t tolerate gluten. The baked goods from by Chloe are also delicious, my favorite is the gluten-free chocolate chip cookie. There’s also a line of dairy-free, vegan ice “cream” including coffee chia chip which is out of this world! Serving brunch on the weekends, and an all-day menu during the week, there’s a wide variety of options to choose from. For those with a nut allergy, there are many nuts used in the dishes, proceed with caution.

Carla Hall’s Southern Kitchen: In the mood for Nashville-style hot chicken? Carla Hall has opened her first restaurant Carla Hall’s Southern Kitchen in Brooklyn. In addition to serving up delicious hot chicken (you choose your level of spice from zero to six), there are also quite a few hot and cold sides that are gluten-free. The best part? It’s an 100% nut-free kitchen. All dishes served don’t contain any nuts, and no outside food is allowed in making it a totally safe environment for those with nut allergies. In addition to homemade soft serve Vermont Nut Free Chocolates also are available for purchase. Colors: Colors is a 100% gluten-free restaurant, with all food sourced locally with non-GMO products. They’re also a non-profit restaurant owned by Restaurant Opportunities Centers United, which was formed to help restaurant workers displaced by The World Trade Center tragedy, and has since grown to the leading national restaurants workers’ rights organizations. The menu changes depending on seasonal ingredients, but a wide range of meat dishes, veggie dishes, and salads are on the menu. Pro tip: order the buttermilk fried chicken. It’s 100% gluten-free, and 100% delicious. For dessert, I always go for the chocolate pot de creme with caramel.
In addition to dinner Tuesday-Saturday, there’s also a special brunch menu offered on Sunday.

Crepes du Nord: Crepes du Nord combines Scandinavian and French crepe-making traditions with sustainable ingredients from their farm in the Catskills, NY. At their farm they grow and raise fresh eggs, fruits, greens, and heritage meats. All savory crepes are made with organic buckwheat flour, butter, and eggs from their farm. For a small extra charge the crepe can be made 100% gluten free. My favorite flavor? The Black forest ham with mushrooms, and Jarlsberg cheese. For a sweet crepe, I always opt for the gluten-free flour, and love the sS’mores flavor which is made from marshmallow, dark chocolate, and whipped cream. While there are no peanuts on the menu, and there are tree nut-free options, a warning that Nutella is used in many of the sweet crepes.

Dos Caminos: With over 100 kinds of tequila (!), delicious guacamole prepared “Mexico City” style, and five locations in NYC, Dos Caminos should be added to your list if you love Mexican food. Part of the BR Guest Hospitality Group, Dos Caminos takes allergies very seriously. When informed of an allergy, they place an allergy sticker on specially made plates to avoid mix-ups at the table. Many of the dishes are naturally gluten free, and don’t contain nuts or dairy, and dishes can also be modified. For an interesting background on their stance on food allergies, this Wall Street Journal article is worth a read.

Dos Toros: Dos Toros was founded by two brothers from California who had a strong love for Mexican food. When they moved to NYC, they were disappointed in the taqueria options available. After searching and searching, they decided to open their own restaurant. Using only fresh ingredients and naturally raised meats, they pride themselves on sourcing great ingredients for their delicious dishes. The guacamole is also incredible, which is pretty difficult to find in NYC! The best part? Zero nuts in anything at Dos Toros,  an entirely naturally gluten free menu (with the exception of flour tortillas for their burritos and quesadillas), and zero dairy (with the exception of cheese and sour cream).

Duke’s NYC: Self described as serving Southern food with “huge portions”, Duke’s NYC is proud to have a completely nut free kitchen. Serving Brunch, Lunch, and Dinner, plus a wide variety of cocktails, no one will leave feeling hungry. Gluten free options are available.

Hu Kitchen:One of my favorite spots to grab a bite in the city, Hu Kitchen is 100% paleo, gluten and dairy free (with the exception of their beer). A fast casual spot located downtown near Union Square, I’ve had breakfast, lunch, and dinner at Hu Kitchen and I can say they’re all delicious. In addition to food cooked to order, there are also a variety of snacks able for take-out. My favorite meal? The 1/4 grilled chicken with seasonal veggies and roasted pineapple. For dessert I also get the paleo carrot cake whoopie pie, or their dark chocolate with mint. Yum. A note to those with nut allergies, while there are nut-free options available, many of the dishes at Hu Kitchen do contain nuts.

Mighty Quinn’s Barbecue: Striving to create BBQ in an “old school way with plenty of wood and time”, the BBQ style at Mighty Quinn’s is borrowed from two great traditions, the Texas and the Carolinas. Using all-natural meats and poultry, then smoked for many hours, the meat is some of the most delicious I’ve had! With an extremely detailed allergen menu, Mighty Quinn’s offers several main courses and side dishes with those with food allergies, as well as enough delicious vegetarian sides to make a non-meat eater happy.

Nizza: This Italian restaurant located in the Midtown neighborhood of NYC offers a wide variety of pastas, pizzas, and meats. All of their pastas can be made gluten free, as well as their pizzas which are made with a chickpea crust (they have a full gluten free menu as well). Known in the food allergy community as being one of the best allergy friendly establishments in NYC, the servers are very knowledgeable and go out of their way to accommodate diners to make them feel safe.

Nourish Kitchen Table: Created by a nutritionist, Nourish Kitchen Table aims to bridge the gap between healthy eating and really delicious food. The menu changes often, depending on seasonality and what they’re inspired by at the greenmarket. Serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner there are a variety of gluten-free and dairy-free options. For breakfast, I love the market vegetable frittata. For lunch, the spicy detox kale salad with a side of jeweled quinoa is delicious, and for dinner, I like a meal that is a bit more filling. I’m obsessed with the Harissa roasted Amish chicken. A note to those with food allergies that many of their dishes do contain nuts, so proceed with caution.

Pie by the Pound: In 2004 the owner of Pie by the Pound was diagnosed with a gluten intolerance and embarked on gluten free quest. He quickly brought his gluten free lifestyle into the restaurant, offering gluten free beers, sandwiches, desserts, and pizza with customers. Also catering to those with dairy allergies, Pie by the Pound also offers a variety of veggie, vegan, and “traditional” pizza pies (the crust in the traditional and vegan pies are free of eggs and dairy). If you have a nut allergy, please note that they do bake peanut butter cookies on site, and hazelnuts and walnuts are used in some of the menu items.

T Bar Steak & Lounge: Taking a new spin on the classic steakhouse offerings, T Bar Steak & Lounge has a raw bar with a variety of tartares, prime, tuna, and salmon steaks, a burger bar, and a variety of salads. With a completely nut free kitchen, there are also several gluten and dairy free options as well. A bit on the pricey side, but worth it for the quality.

New York City Dessert Shops

A la Mode Shop: Founded by a husband and wife duo, A la Mode Shop churns out beautifully colored, homemade, small batch ice cream. Sample flavors include rose strawberry, caramel, pink vanilla sprinkle, and blue cotton candy marshmallow. Pro tip: order the mini chocolate covered ice cream doughnuts!

Chloe’s Soft Serve: The soft serve at Chloe’s is made from three ingredients: fruit, water, and organic cane sugar. Flavors are offered on a rotating basis, sample flavors include: apple, banana, blood orange, blueberry, cranberry, dark chocolate, mango, pear, pineapple, plum, pumpkin, raspberry, strawberry, and tangerine. Smoothies and breakfast items (waffle breakfast!) are also offered.

Eleni’s: Located in the Chelsea Market, Eleni’s colorful bakery offers a nut-free haven in one of the top food destinations in NYC. As the mother of two children, Eleni wanted to create a space where children (and adults) with food allergies would be able to go in a pick any treat without worrying about if it was safe to eat. Erin McKenna’s Bakery: Erin McKenna wanted to create a bakery free of harmful ingredients, focusing on those with gluten, dairy, egg, and soy sensitivities, the health-minded, and those with allergies who are often unable to indulge. While there are no nut products in any of the treats, the bakery uses Bob’s Red Mill Flour which also processes nut flours, although their machinery is power washed the between runs and the initial 30-pounds of flour is discarded to prevent cross contamination. Vegan soft serve, cupcakes, cookies, doughnuts, loaves, and brownies are all on the menu, and are all delicious.

DF Mavens: This East Village small-batch ice cream shop offers artisanal frozen desserts in addition to several gluten free waffles and vegan baked goods. DF Mavens offers over forty flavors and counting, in addition to seasonal limited edition offerings.

The Donut Pub: Since opening their doors in 1964, The Donut Pub has been a mainstay in the Chelsea area for decades. Whether it’s their out-of-this-world red velvet donuts or our black and white cookies which one magazine called, “the BEST” in the city, the Donut Pub has something for everyone. From old-fashioned classics like crullers and honey-dipped to modern favorites like donuts coated in coconut and sprinkles, the Donut Pub is a treasure trove of tasty treats.

Dun Well Doughnuts: Unable to find a vegan doughnut in NYC that satisfied his craving, owners Christopher and Dan made it their quest to create an amazing doughnut and open NYC’s first-all vegan doughnut shop. With over 200 flavors and counting, the doughnuts are baked fresh twice daily, vegan frozen dessert is also served (and if you really dare..order it over a hot doughnut).

Everybody Eats: While Everybody Eats doesn’t have a typical storefront, they do encourage customers to place orders and pick-up from their bakery in Brooklyn. Focusing strictly on taste and texture, the breads and cookies from Everybody Eats are out of this world delicious! Highlighted items include the challah bread, banana loaf, and sugar cookies. Cakes are also available for special orders.

NoGlu: After years of success as one of the most popular Gluten-Free eateries in Paris, NoGlu opened their first American location on the Upper East Side of New York City. The pastries are out of this world, delicious cakes, tarts, and cookies made using a variety of gluten-free flours. With sandwiches and fresh juices, NoGlu is the perfect place to pick up a light lunch with a treat for dessert!

Jennifer’s Way: Founded by actress Jennifer Esposito after she was diagnosed with celiac disease, Jennifer wanted to create a bakery that wasn’t just gluten free, but was also healthy and nutritious. Using organic, non-GMO ingredients, and no refined sugar, the retail bakery storefront in the east village offers a variety of cakes, cookies, cupcakes, and breads. The commercial bakery located in Queens, New York is 100% gluten and nut free, all products can be ordered online. In addition to bagels, breads, cookies, muffins, and rolls, flours and pancake mixes are also for sale.

Rice Cream Shoppe:Love rice pudding? So do I! This shop has over 20 flavors, many of which are gluten-free, and always offers a few dairy-free vegan flavors as well. With a range of toppings you can customize your rice pudding to your liking, the combinations are endless! Please note if you have a nut allergy that nut toppings and a few nut flavors are offered, I’d refrain from visiting if you have a serious allergy.

Treat House: In October 2011, husband and wife Daniel and Eli Russell were charged with the task of raising $50 for charity. Being a passionate cook, Daniel volunteered to make treats for the bake sale using rice cereal and marshmallows. Coming up with three initial flavors (mint-chocolate cookie, butter scotch sprinkle, and cherry-dark chocolate), the treats sold out within minutes! Inspired by their success, Daniel and Eli contacted their former pasty chef and formed the idea for Treat House. Treat House Rice Krispie Treats are made with health in mind, unless specified all treats are gluten free, dairy free, and nut free. Homemade marshmallows are made using raw cane sugar. Breakfast bars, ice cream bars, and cake pops are also offered for purchase. The best part? 10% of each treat sold is donated to the Food Bank for New York City.

Tu Lu’s: After discovering my gluten intolerance, Tu Lu’s was one of the first bakeries where I enjoyed a chocolate chip cookie that came close in taste to a cookie containing gluten, and I was hooked! The muffins, cookies, brownies, doughnuts, and loaves are all delicious, and I’m always curious about their rotating cupcake flavor of the week will be (chocolate cherry is my personal favorite). Savory items are also offered, including crackers, croutons, sunflower bread, and panini sandwiches (turkey, chicken, cheese, and spinach). During holidays Tu Lu’s sells themed items, and I can say their stuffing mix for Thanksgiving completed my meal.

  1. Great list! If I can add a few nut-free kitchens (though not the type that vet their vendors or anything): Lombardi’s Pizza, Marumi, Otto’s Tacos, Luke’s Lobster, S’Mac, Sticky’s Finger Joint, Uma Temakeria, Korilla, and Gunbae. Worth a few Googles!
