Thanksgiving is right around the corner, and I’m gearing up to cook an epic feast that’s nut-free, gluten-free, and also includes dairy-free and vegan options! I look at it as a challenge that I’m excited to tackle. One of the trickiest items is stuffing, a dish usually full of gluten..and nuts. Today is also National Stuffing Day, which felt like the perfect time for me to share a few of my favorite recipes and pre-made allergen-free (nut-free and gluten-free specifically) stuffing mixtures. Even though stuffing is traditionally eaten at holidays, I’m a firm believer that it can be enjoyed year-round.

Hilary's Eat Well Gluten-Free, Nut Free, Dairy-Free Stuffing

Hilary’s Eat Well Holiday Stuffing: I’m a huge fan of all Hilary’s products, and was so excited to see their Limited Edition Holiday Stuffing at Whole Foods last year. Their Limited Edition Holiday Stuffing is full of traditional holiday flavor, yet free-from gluten, dairy, soy, yeast, eggs, corn, and nuts. They took the rich blend of organic millet, leafy greens, and hemp seeds together with celery, apple, parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme, and made it into a delicious ready-to-bake dish that will please any holiday guest, with any and all dietary restrictions. Purchase from Whole Foods.

Gillian's Wheat, Gluten, Dairy, and Soy Free Stuffing
Gillian’s Home-Style Stuffing: Made in a dedicated wheat, gluten, peanut, and tree-nut facility, this stuffing is 100% gluten-free and nut-free. It’s a great stuffing base, made from rice and soy flour. I’d suggest adding in some veggies (celery, mushrooms, etc.) and spices (rosemary, garlic, basil) to add a bit of zing. Purchase here.

Aleia's Savory and Plain Gluten-Free and Nut-Free Stuffing

Aleia’s Gluten-Free Stuffing: Aleia’s is one of my favorite companies, as they were one of the first to produce gluten-free, Non-GMO products, including their incredible stuffing mix. Made from a mixture of brown/white rice and tapioca flour, the stuffing comes in two flavor options: savory or plain. I’ve added apples and chicken sausage in years past to the savory flavor, and it was the hit of the meal! Note: Aleia’s stuffing isn’t made a nut-free facility, but the stuffing mixes don’t contain nuts. Purchase here.

Anna's Dairy, Nut, and Corn Free Bread Mix

Anna’s Classic Herb Bread Mix: This is a bit more involved, it means making your own bread from Anna’s mixture that is nut-free, corn-free, dairy-free, and gluten-free first, then putting together your own stuffing recipe, but it’s worth it! I usually make this bread a few days before Thanksgiving to give it time to harden, which is better for stuffing, then put together the stuffing the day before Thanksgiving. Anna’s bread mixtures are out of this world (on an unrelated note to Thanksgiving, her banana bread mix is a fixture in my household). Bonus: Check out her recipe for Gluten-Free Butternut Squash Bread Pudding. Yum! Purchase here.

There are also many bread alternatives to use as a stuffing base, which are naturally gluten-free and nut-free, including sticky rice (pictured above),wild rice, quinoa, and cornbread.

Wild Rice and Mushroom Stuffing: This gluten-free, nut-free, vegan recipe from Detoxinista is one of my favorites to eat year round. Using vegetable broth and coconut oil, in addition to mushrooms, celery, herbs, apples, and cranberries, it’s the perfect blend of sweet and savory. Obviously omit the pecans if wanting to make the dish nut-free. The best part? You can make it in under an hour. Get the recipe here.

Quinoa and Winter Squash Bake: I love this recipe from The Kitchn, which uses butternut squash, herbs, cranberries, and pumpkin seeds to create a dish that can be eaten as the main course, or as a side. Make sure to select a brand of quinoa that is also nut-free, such as Living Now.

Gluten-Free, Nut-Free Cornbread Mix

Glutino Gluten-Free, Nut-Free Yankee Cornbread Mix: Glutino’s mixes are made in an 100% nut-free and gluten-free facility. Their Yankee Cornbread Mix is the perfect base and a nice twist on traditional stuffing. Again, a bit more involved as you need to make the bread a few days ahead of time, then put together the stuffing, but it’s worth it for the piece of mind. Here’s a great cornbread stuffing recipe from Whole Foods. Purchase here.
